| My experiences with tantric lovemaking: Stillness and Motion, part one... | ||
|
When I first read about tantra in my youth, I read the words "meditative sex" and thought... "Boring!" The description I read was not entirely accurate though... there is both stillness and motion in tantra... When I was a teenager, I found some books on Taoist lovemaking and started practicing Taoist lovemaking techniques. The initial techniques I tried used both slow and rapid movements, and little stillness, and the results, in terms of what I and my lovers would feel, were nothing sort of astounding. We began to experience both extraordinary pleasure, and extraordinary states of awareness. This was not dull navel-gazing, by any means! There were combinations of breathing methods, thrusting patterns, positions, and accupressure which were incredibly satisfying for both lovers, and allowed prolonged ecstatic lovemaking. In turn, my lover and I would both feel what very sensibly could be described as the movement of "energy" through both of our bodies... Now, I was not one to talk about "chakras" or "auras" or "energy" at the time. In fact, I had a very scientific, un-new-agey upbringing. I thought those terms were pretty flakey. But I could definitely understand why people would call these sensations "energy" or "chi"... I also began to experience states of awareness and bliss that I had no name for, because I was practicing from a few books I had read, and didn't know that there was much more to the Taoist sexual/spiritual teachings... It was years later, when I started learning the oral traditions of Hindu and Tibetan Yoga and Tantra, that it became clear to me that the physical and subtle experiences of Lower Tantra were similar to those limited experiences I had with the Taoist teachings. There was an emphasis on physical and subtle sensation, and the arousal of this experience of "energy" within the body - which the Hindus called prana, or kundalini shakti, instead of "chi" or "qi", and the Tibetans called loong... When I started to read about Higher Tantric teachings... the mental and sexual practices done while in a one-pointed mind state ("samadhi"), and frequently while dead still, I began to understand my "unexplainable" teenage experiences with altered consciousness and bliss from lovemaking. What had spontaneously happened to me as a teenager had names. And just as there were parallels to Lower Tantra (the more physical side) in Taoist lovemaking, when I knew what to ask for, I found there were Taoist parallels to the Higher Tantric teachings. I knew what to look up in books, and I knew what to ask the startling array of spiritual and physical masters who suddenly started appearing in my life. Tibetan Lamas, Internal Martial Art and Qi Gong masters, and Tantric gurus... More on how to do this stuff yourself in the next Tantra Tips... "Stillness and Motion, part two..."
